You need a button holer attachment. My ancient Singer machine came with one that made button holes an absolute breeze!

When I was a dressmaker, I used to do all the buttonholes because no-one else wanted too, I quite enjoyed them, probably could'nt manage it now though.

sounds like the tension is off somewhere. try fiddling with that, as in the bobbin tension.

I second Moly's suggestion. That's what it sounds like to me, too.You have no idea how many times I fought with my machine before I figured out that whole bobbin tension thing.

and it can be quite mind boggling. gak.if you have remnants of the fabric you are/were sewing play with that.

Yes -- because very often the weight and thickness of the fabric play a significant role in the whole tension thing. That may be why it worked well on a scrap but not so well on whatever you were...
